My paintings are my method of breaking away from a lifetime of technical drawing.
During my long career as a Chartered Surveyor I've enjoyed building, drawing them, exploring them, re-shaping them and even on holiday I am to be found dragging Lorna around some old castle or monastery. Not surprising then that it is buildings that chiefly capture my artistic interest too.
The influence of Clarice Cliff is obvious but perhaps less apparent is my great admiration and respect for artists such as the self taught naive painter Henri Rousseau and Salvador Dalí who was a skilled draftsman as well as a brilliant artist.
Drawing is the essential base for all my work. Perspective is important to me and so however 'cartoon-like' the finished result, you can be certain it's in perspective!
I use acrylics in order to achieve the colour combinations I prefer to work with, oil paint being too muted for my purposes.
